DEPARTMENT S SAT 5th OCT - 'THE SUNDOWNERS' PLUS SUPPORT TBC & CLUB NIGHT TIL 3.00AM @ THE LANES, BRISTOL
THE SUNDOWNERS are a five-piece band of siblings and friends from just across the Mersey, in The Wirral. They’re cooking up a melting pot of musical influences including Fleetwood Mac, Crosby Stills and Nash, Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters. After taking their time, writing real songs, putting on great gigs and capturing an avid audience around the country, they've just done a knockout performance on The BBC Introducing Stage at none other than Glastonbury Festival.
They’ve already supported Ren Harvieu and Ian Skelly and James Skelly & The Intenders on their UK tours as well as Cats Eyes in London; Faris loved them and Weller got into them too. You see, there’s something otherworldly and unknowable about The Sundowners. But what we do know is that they have great tunes and great haircuts, and what more do you need?
The Sundowners’ creation story is as organic and honest as you would expect from the band that brings us ‘Hummingbird’. The two front women on the small-town five-piece nurtured each other’s musical talents with Niamh teaching Fiona how to play guitar, and Fiona teaching Niamh to sing. These two were then informally adopted into Fiona’s brother’s band, though the other members left. The talented trio of Alfie, Fiona and Niamh went searching for the band’s missing parts; bassist and drummer. They were successful in their hunt for bassist, finding Tim. However, after growing tired of looking for a drummer they began to create and gig as a guitar-wielding quartet. Five performances in Jim took place behind the drum-kit, and the rest, as they say, is history.
NME:
"The Sundowners are an undoubtedly exciting prospect with a very defined sense of who they are"
John Leckie:
"Sundowners rule"
