That Dave is from an engineering point of view utterly superb. Shame that same quality is so hard to come by commercially. I more than most know just how much attention you've put into it, and others I'm sure would have you certified, but that is a "PROPER" job. Well done young man.

Cheer`s T D. If people have been following this thread they Will know of a vespa engine done to a similar spec (your`s). Watch out soon for Jim`s engine, very similar. T Paul`s sound`s great. D T`s a dream fulfilled.

well the cold has slowed progress but at least the S3 engine is back in, back to the bathroom tiles tomorrow but depending on how much gets done it could be the garage Thursday.

The exhaust (under construction/modification) 80`s/90`s Fresco heavy duty version, 45mm inside bore. Was Dave T`s perhaps he can fill us in on it`s back ground? The reason why the down pipe/exhaust is in three part`s is i wanted to wire lock the first part of the down pipe to the cylinder, this make`s fitting the cooling cowling and wire locking very difficult especially if the down pipe is in one piece. I hope that make`s some sense ?

The exhaust is a 90,s Fresco that AF modified by taking apart and making it 45mm with modified cone. Then rewelding silencer end to go over the kickstart hence they were called AF Fresco OTT. They may seem heavy duty but thats because AF strengthed the mounting bracket so they didnt snap. I had various exhausts in 80s and 90s including Mickek and found that the OTT didnt fall apart and worked well on the Taffspeed stage 4 with a 30mm dellorto i was running at the time. Old school but very 80s retro. You can get Fresco copies from 'you know where' but this is the real thing improved by AF then Mr B

I have got the Mugello 225 back from Langcourt having had the nikasil striped ready for porting. The Mugello 225 transfer porting is only standard timing so as recomended by Scooter Centre Koln i am using 60mm crank with 1mm packer taking transfer timing to 128 Degrees. Having bought a Dremmel and a 2stroke tuning book (2 stroke Performance Tuning by A. Graham Bell Haynes) i am taking exhaust to 175 Degrees and inlet to 150 Degrees which should give more topend and torque without having to change down all the time. This is all quess work but hey ho lets have a go.

The spigot on the barrel is a loose fit in the casing and i have had to take the stud holes out to 9mm dia to get the stud spacing lined up correctly. The transfers don't line up very well with the casing transfers but as i am matching barrel and casing then not too much of a problem. I have had the head and barrel doweled and the extra 3 holes in the barrel drilled and taped to suit the head so the head now has 7 studs. Just bolting on any kit is a bit hit and miss i think. Blue printing is the answer i think, matching everything up must help.

Thanks Dave for the info on the Fresco. well what can I say about today(sat), started off early 6.45am heading north to Leicester. Called in at Lee`s (Jim`s friend). After some banter and a cup of tea, it was a two minute walk to that well known engine tunning guru Harry Barlow, dropping off Jim`s engine casing. Back to Lee`s for s bite to eat and more tea. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Lee for the much appreciated hospitality. Then the three of us headed into Brum to Gran sport. Once again more banter and an enjoyable afternoon pondering over scooter`s. We got back to Harry`s late afternoon where Harry was still hard at it. We were invited to stay and view what was going on . I can`t explain what a mind boggling mathematical lesson using charts and computer programs to do engine tuning /porting followed by the man himself carrying out the practical side. What he`s done: Welded up the outer part of the throat, giving more gasket surface area and allowing the casing to go to stage 5. Using a SR type cylinder which he recommends, port and modify to stage 5. Re profile the head to suit. Rebuild a new crank using a 116mm Yamaha large pin con rod, using quality bearings both ends, 60mm crank. Suzuki piston. A new mag flange using F.A.G. bearings and double lipped viton seals (throughout engine). A 25mm Dell`Orto carb and manifold jetted to suit. All calculations were added up and Jim should have an engine of 193cc with loads of torque. We left Harry`s at 8.30pm, what a day!

Hi Dave. The reason why we left Harry`s at 8.30pm is we brought the engine home with us! Jim has got a data sheet listing all the work done i.e port timing`s, hope to get some picture`s of the day on here soon.
